ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Bay Area Photographers Collective will present Collective Visions:

Collective Visions highlights the power of artistic collectives as a strategy for resilience and connection, revealing how collaboration fosters individual creativity. Through diverse imagery, viewers are invited to explore how collective belonging shapes expression, uncovering themes of trust, shared vision, and inspiration. From personal narratives to broader stories of place and identity, the works celebrate artistic community as both anchor and launchpad—proving that creativity thrives through connection, dialogue, and shared exploration

ABOUT STARTUP ART FAIR
Bypassing the traditional gallery system, Startup connects art buyers to curated up-and-coming artists. Over 60 artists – selected by art world experts – transform hotel rooms into individual exhibition spaces at the fun and funky Hotel del Sol, a 1950s motor lodge in the Marina District. stARTup is held the same weekend as the SF Art Market gallery fair at Fort Mason (within walking distance) so lots of art to see (and buy).

6 Feet Apart @ Birdhouse

I’m excited to present a solo exhibit of my 6 Feet Apart series at Birdhouse Gallery in the Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco. It’s a new gallery that shares a storefront space with the office of an architectural services company called bcooperative.

  • February 1 – March 16, 2025
  • Thurs & Fri 1–5pm; Sat 2–6pm
    • I’ll be there in person every Saturday
  • Opening: Saturday, February 8, 2–6pm
  • Closing: Sunday, March 16, 2–6pm

The exhibition closing event also included an early exhibition prototype of my forthcoming book project 5 Years, 6 Feet Apart. Developed alongside the installation, the publication gathers photographs, writing, and reflections around the visual language of social distancing — arrows, tape, decals, and improvised signage that quietly reshaped how we moved through shared space. Presented here as a working publication, the book reflects an ongoing process of editing, design, and dialogue that continues to evolve beyond the gallery context.

    • 4pm Ari will give a brief Artist Talk
    • …followed by 3 more short presentations
      • Renny Pritikin was chief curator of The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. He will read a short curatorial response written for 5 Years, 6 Feet Apart called “The Aesthetics of Peril and Panic”.
      • Christopher Lee is a medical epidemiologist focused on global epidemic and pandemic preparedness, detection, and response. He will read a short essay written for 5 Years, 6 Feet Apart, a personal reflection of his COVID experience titled “Lines, Loss, and the Gravity of Time“
      • Meg Shiffler served as the Arts Recovery Liaison at San Francisco’s COVID-19 Command Center. She will give a short talk detailing her work during the pandemic. She’ll share insights into how she bridged the gap between the arts community and the city’s emergency response

The exhibition includes new installations that leverage my archive of 1000s of images gathered around the world of the ubiquitous social-distancing marks that told us all to stand apart during the pandemic. Works include concrete sculptures, murals, framed and unframed photos on the walls, windows and floors, publications and more.

The groupings delve into a wide variety of metaphors, encompassing themes of transformation, the fragility of health, the rigorous yet uncertain nature of scientific exploration, and the visceral, often overwhelming experience of emotional panic. Through these layered associations, they invite the viewer to reflect on the interconnectedness of personal and collective responses to uncertainty and upheaval.

They are visually compelling abstractions but also stark reminders of the anxiety that led to their widespread presence. Once symbols of the pandemic’s intensity, they now fade into routine, unnoticed as we navigate the city.

Leftovers @ The Curated Fridge

I have one image in this unusual group show.

The Curated Fridge is an art gallery in Somerville, Massachusetts – well not a full gallery but literally one fridge in one apartment! it’s a fun idea and has grown into a bigger project over the last 10 years with a wide range of influential curators involved and remote exhibits in a variety of other galleries.

Leftovers features prints from previous submissions that were given a second chance to shine. Curated by Yorgos Efthymiadis @yorgosphoto, founder of TCF, the exhibition consists of 93 photographs.

An opening party is scheduled for January 18th (3-5pm)
Location: 281 Medford St, Somerville, MA 02143

I have one of my 6 Feet Apart  images in the show:

50|50 @ Sanchez Art Center “Interface”

This is the 16th Annual 50|50
Sept 6 – Oct 6, 2024

This is an annual fundraiser where the gallery invites 50 artists to each create a grid of 50 artworks. Each artwork is 6″ square. My Interface series suits the format nicely. Last year I showed my 6 Feet Apart series. The exhibition fills all three galleries at Sanchez Art Center and has a big local audience. It’s a very festive event and part of the fun is seeing the art disappear off the wall as it is purchased.

Juror: Andra Norris. Andra Norris Gallery exhibits contemporary works of art in downtown Burlingame, California, which is situated on the Bay Area’s Peninsula. The gallery mounts 10 exhibitions annually, featuring and selling paintings, photography, sculpture, and mixed media from established and mid-career international artists with Bay Area ties. Since opening its doors in 2012, this mid-Peninsula gem has sought to bridge artists, collectors, and enthusiasts, by providing exceptional visual arts experiences and exhibitions of artwork from around the globe, while placing a special emphasis on California’s own rich Bay Area

I’ll be there Friday, Sept 6: 5pm and
Sunday, Sept 29,
1-3pm (free)

Ticketed
opening weekend:

  • Friday, Sept 6 and Saturday, Sept 7
    • This is the only opportunity for gallery visitors to see the show in its entirety; artworks purchased during the opening stay on the wall.

Free After the Opening Weekend Fundraiser:

  • Sept 6 – Oct 6: Fri, Sat, Sun, 1–5pm
  • Also By appointment during the week

Interface @ KG+ 2024 “face house”

I had a solo exhibition of my Interface series at the “Face House” in Kyoto in April 2024. Having my images of my “faces” in the “Face House” was a special synergy that tickled my brian in fun ways!

The gallery is part of the “creative studio & shop OOO” and includes a store with handmade goods and DIY craft kits on one side and a pop-up gallery on the other side. This will be the 3rd time I am participating in this amazing city-wide photo festival that includes more than 100 exhibitions. This year I am part of the KG+ pick up portion of the festival.

Memento Mori | Memento Vivere @ MAGC

MEMENTO MORI | MEMENTO VIVERE
A joint exhibition by the Bay Area Photographers Collective and Samurai Foto Yokohama, Japan); Curated by Trisha Lagaso Goldberg

I created a new floor-based installation of “concrete photos” for this group show as a continuation of my series 6 Feet Apart. I led the first exchange BAPC did with Samurai Foto in 2018 in Yokohama (my first show in Japan!) and we’ve been trying ever since to find a way to host the group here in the Bay Area. After many Covid-related delays, we are so excited to have this show at the beautiful art center in Ross.

Caption for this installation:

6 Feet Apart: Memorial
Adhesive Pigment Prints & Concrete Sculptural Prints as Installation on Floor
90” Diameter

This typology investigates the ubiquitous ground markers directing people to stand 6 feet apart to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These markers are often just a single piece of tape adhered to a sidewalk, distressed from months of being stepped on.

The sculptural photographs reference mysterious structures like Stonehenge – or tombstone-like memorials. My photographic method of collecting. sorting, and classifying mirrors the scientific processes employed to fight the pandemic.

The documentary style offers a chance to reflect on how the pandemic changed us individually and as a society. it also highlights the irony of working together by staying

Curator’s Statment: The artworks in Memento Mori | Memento Vivere reflect the full spectrum between life and death and are as varied and complex as the seen and unseen forces active in the natural world around us. The exhibition is designed to highlight the intrinsic way of things—from tenuous beginnings, to a middle life that is pedestrian and glorious in equal measures, and an end that may be tragic or magical. As the viewer makes their way through each space, my hope is that these works serve as a reminder for all to embrace this moment as the unknown on the horizon draws near.

Size Matters @ MediumSD

The Size Matters exhibition is a group show of small images associated with the wonderful “Medium festival of photography” in San Diego.

The exhibition will be on view from April 2 through April 27, 2024. A closing reception for the artists will be held from 6:00 – 8:00pm on Saturday, April 27.

Size Matters will be on view at the Athenaeum Art Center inside Bread & Salt, 1955 Julian Avenue, 92113 (map)

I will have one image from my series 6 Feet Apart. This is a new exploration taking these images of sidewalk COVID marks and transforming them into unique objects. I call these Artifacts: they are prints of my images that were placed on the sidewalk outdoors for a month or two during my exhibition in March 2023. The images became faded, scratched, stained, and torn. Now they are framed: protecting and commemorating the time they represent. They were captured from the sidewalk, put back on the sidewalk and then removed again — making a full circle.  They stand as a metaphor for the pandemic and how it has changed us.

EVENT: Barrio Art Crawl on Saturday, April 13, 11am-8pm.
A self-guided tour with gallery/exhibit showings, open studios, outdoor murals, music, dining, and shopping highlighting Chicano art and culture.

Tonight we had the pleasure of hosting Mark Citret Tonight we had the pleasure of hosting Mark Citret for a deep dive into his five-decade career. It was a rare treat to see the evolution of a single image across silver gelatin, platinum, and inkjet prints—a true masterclass in how the medium shapes the message. Mark’s work is a testament to the art of “quietly seeing,” finding profound beauty in the overlooked corners of our world through a lifelong commitment to black-and-white photography.
