Return to Simplicity @Piedmont Center for the Arts

I’m honored to announce that one of my panoramas won 2nd place prize at this exhibition that opens next week.
Piedmont Center for the Arts First Annual Juried Art Show
November 1-December 1, 2013
Opening reception:  Friday, November 1, 6-9pm
Hours: Friday-Sunday, 12-3pm (closed 11/29)
801 Magnolia Avenue, Piedmont, CA  94611

The Piedmont Center for the Arts is honored to have Rene de Guzman, Senior Curator of Art, Oakland Museum of California, selecting works for our first juried art exhibition, entitled Return to Simplicity.  The theme is meant to reflect the current emphasis on a return to basics, much like there was during the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century where artists found refuge in using organic materials and handcrafted products. Open to artists working in all 2 dimensional media and living in Bay Area.  This juried show offers a window into the most current developments in contemporary art of the region.

West Oakland. A preview of “Through Line,” openi West Oakland.

A preview of “Through Line,” opening at @bedfordgallery Bedford Gallery in January with @bapcsf - curated by @artalatrinca

This work began nearly ten years ago, with photographs made on train journeys. I've been returning to it recently, rethinking how it might exist beyond the photographs themselves.

For this exhibition, the panoramic images will be printed directly onto the gallery wall in horizontal strips, gradually taking shape over the course of the show.

I've been revisiting earlier projects and finding new ways to bring them into the present. It's been an interesting way to rethink the work and where it might go next.

The selected artists for FORECAST 2026 share an interest in the theoretical dimensions of photography: time, reality, and memory. Each artist brings these ideas into contemporary focus through formalist intervention, material investigation, and autobiography.

An iPhone, a moving train, and a panorama mode used wrong. THROUGH LINE is a mural printed onto the gallery wall strip by strip, so it keeps growing through the show. Hills repeat, foregrounds smear, diagonals break apart. It’s what travel looks like when the camera tries to keep up.
